Puzzle #115

Royal Navy

October 4, 2025

This hue is inspired by the deep blue of the British Royal Navy uniforms, first standardized in 1748. Officers were issued coats dyed with natural indigo, creating a rich, near-black blue that was both practical at sea and dignified in appearance. The association between this specific shade and naval service was so strong that it became known simply as navy blue. Over time, other fleets adopted the color, and the name entered common language to describe the dark blue we recognize today. From its origins in indigo-dyed wool on the decks of sailing ships, navy blue has endured as a universal symbol of authority, tradition, and style.
