Puzzle #83

Granny Smith

September 2, 2025

This hue is inspired by the crisp green skin of the Granny Smith apple, one of the world’s most recognizable cultivars. Its vivid shade comes from the absence of red pigments (anthocyanins) in the apple’s skin, allowing the green color to persist even when ripe. Unlike most apple varieties that develop red or yellow hues as they mature, Granny Smith apples remain bright green throughout ripening, only developing a subtle yellow tint when overripe. First discovered in Australia in 1868 by Maria Ann “Granny” Smith, the apple became a global staple for both eating and baking, prized for its firm texture and tart flavor. Today, its bright green stands out in orchards and markets alike, a color that has become shorthand for freshness, tartness, and bite.
