Puzzle #105

Copper Patina

September 24, 2025

This hue is inspired by the weathered blue-green patina that forms on copper as it ages. The color emerges from a slow chemical process: copper exposed to air, moisture, and pollutants gradually reacts to form copper carbonate, copper sulfate, and other compounds. Over decades, this transformation creates the familiar turquoise-green seen on historic roofs, domes, and statues—most famously the Statue of Liberty, whose original reddish-brown surface turned green within 20 years of exposure. Beyond protection from further corrosion, the patina carries an aura of time and endurance, a shade that signals resilience shaped by the elements.
