Puzzle #35

Clownfish

July 16, 2025

This hue is inspired by the bold orange of the clownfish, a reef-dwelling species known for its vivid coloration and striking white stripes. The color comes from carotenoid pigments in the fish’s diet, which accumulate in their skin. These fish make their home among the stinging tentacles of sea anemones, where they are protected by a specialized mucus coating that prevents the anemone’s stinging cells from triggering. The relationship is mutually beneficial: the anemone provides shelter from predators, while the clownfish helps keep its host clean and provides nutrients through its waste. The hue became instantly iconic thanks to Finding Nemo, where one small fish made this hue unforgettable.
