This hue is inspired by the soft orange flesh of a ripe cantaloupe, a melon prized for its sweetness and juicy texture. The color comes from beta-carotene, the same pigment that gives carrots and sweet potatoes their hue. Native to regions stretching from Persia to Africa, cantaloupe was introduced to Europe by way of Italy, where it got its name from the papal gardens of Cantalupo.
