Puzzle #116

Bumblebee

October 5, 2025

This hue is inspired by the bright yellow of a bumblebee’s fuzzy body, set in sharp contrast with its bold black stripes. The yellow comes from pigments in the insect’s cuticle and fine hairs, which serve as a visual warning of its sting. This classic black-and-yellow pattern is an evolutionary strategy known as aposematism—nature’s way of telling predators to back off. To us, though, the cheerful yellow of a bumblebee signals summer fields, pollinated flowers, and the steady hum of life in motion.
