Puzzle #109

British Phone Booth

September 28, 2025

This hue is inspired by the bold red of Britain’s iconic telephone booths, officially known as K2 and K6 kiosks. Designed by architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the first cast-iron kiosks were introduced in the 1920s, with the K6 model—celebrating King George V’s Silver Jubilee in 1935—becoming the most widespread. Though Scott originally proposed silver, the Post Office chose the bright red to ensure visibility on busy streets, making the booths easy to spot from a distance, rain or shine. Over time, this vivid crimson shade became a fixture of British identity, as recognizable as double-decker buses or the Union Jack.
